Allyn Scura has been selling and designing unique vintage eyewear since the 80’s. Allyn and her husband Scott own @allynscura eyewear. On top of designing vintage-inspired frames, this small company has over 75,000 pairs of vintage eyewear - ranging from the 18th century to the 1970’s.
“When I got into eyewear I started with 5,000 pairs of unused frames that I got in New Jersey. This optician had taken over his father’s business and then decided to retire. He had a closet full of gold frames, tortoise shell and lunettes and it was like Christmas to me. And that’s how I started.”
“I was living in New York City in the 80’s for god-sakes. I was absolutely working my tail off being this uber kid and partying at studio 54. It was crazy fun but the long and short of it is that I burnt out around 26. I quit my job and took a bunch of freelance design projects in North Carolina. I was designing things like couches, rugs and flatware. I spent one year to the day there and then I was out. Being in North Carolina, there wasn’t much to do so I started antiquing. I would buy these wonderful antique frames and take them back to New York City. People started stopping me on the street and saying, "Where did you get those glasses?!”
“I was inspired by the vintage frames and I am came out with my first collection called the Voyage collection. And of course I love literature so I named things like the F. Scott, The Nin and The Bronty. I merged my love for literature with my love for design.”
